Scripture: Isaiah 2:19 (NIV): "Men will flee to caves in the rocks and to holes in the ground from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth."
Thought: To me, it is time to realize these words are prophetic. They are promised to come true.
Question: Do I want to run and hide from God?
Unless reconciled to God, man will always be running from God. We either reconcile to, or run from, Him. I'm sure these running people are not likely to call what God does at that moment, (His "Day" of shaking the earth), "splendid". Yet the Word here calls it so. And indeed, depending on your viewpoint, that Great Day of the Lord will either be terrific or terrible. No more middle ground or position of rationalization. No more opportunity for decision-making. Those days are gone. Today is His Day. We'd better make sure we're on the side we'd rather be on. If we choose to oppose God, we are fools. No "cave" will help when His power is unleashed. We may not have known His power even existed before; but now He "rises", or wakes up, as it were, and suddenly His power will come to our attention.
This "day", is for "the proud and lofty and all that is exalted", (verse 12). It is a day for their humiliation. Certainly, to have no more forests, mountains or hills, no more standing cities or sea-going ships, (verse 13 - 16 of this chapter), will leave man with very little to resort to. What is left are "caves in the rocks" and "holes in the ground." There man will attempt to find relief from "the splendor of his majesty" which He displays in order to "shake the earth."
I wouldn't want to be one of these desperate souls, would you? I would never want to live in "dread" of God!
Prayer: King of Kings, I bow before You in reverence and respect for Who You are. Praise Your Name that repentance of sin and faith in Jesus frees one from the desire to flee from You. Amen.
