Isaiah - Day 52

versebyverse | July 17, 2008 19:40

Scripture:  Isaiah 2:21 (NIV):  "They will flee to caverns in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth."

Thought:  To me, when God repeats an expression in scripture we ought to pay attention.

Question:  Do I respect God or dread Him?

This verse is a repetition of verse 19 in this same chapter, and a fulfillment (to come) of verse 10 in this chapter.  The identical wording is repeated three times for the reader, that there will be "dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty."  Why does the Lord emphasize this so much?  I think, given the context, that through repetition God is striving to propel mankind away from the lies of idol-worship and into the truth of His power and glory.  Believe on Me, He cries, trust in Me and worship Me, He calls to them.  Are we listening?  In Revelation 6:15 and 16 the "overhanging crags" are called upon to fall down and crush those who have fled from God.  Future days will see these scriptures fulfilled.

It can only be imagined what "dread" rises in the hearts and minds of men who come to relize it is too late to repent.  Let us repent now!  Running becomes the only clear, logical solution.  Hiding becomes the instinctive response.  But there could have been a better way.  Let us heed the example--let us hear and turn to God!

Prayer:  God in Heaven, may I never dread You so much that I choose to flee from You.  Thank You that, in Christ, I can be reconciled to You.  Amen.
