Scripture: Isaiah 2:20 (NIV): "In that day men will throw away to the rodents and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship."
Thought: To me, it is tragically sad that man cannot discern enough truth today to throw away all worthless idols now.
Question: Have I "thrown away" my "idols"?
The former trappings of an "advanced" culture will be trashed. Once "worshipped", these idols will now be discarded. No longer useful or helpful, the truth of their vanity and emptiness will become apparent. These "idols", (and they could be many things), are fit only for scavengers and waste disposal. It appears God may finally by getting through to them, or is He? But isn't it too late?
Somehow the realization has come that the hand-made "god" is not helping! Disaster has come and praying to the golden or silver image has not worked! Now men are encumbered with the weight of such objects and the decision is made to throw them away "to the rodents and bats" who live in the caves into which these troubled souls have fled. What a picture of humiliation and frustrated despair! Why had they not trusted in God? Why had they not believed Him or listened to Him? With fierce independence they will still refuse Him. How unbelievably sad!
Prayer: Great God, help me to cast my worthless idols down today before a desperate scene like this becomes necessary. You will separate man and idol; either now, by teaching and correction, or later, by judgment and destruction. Give me wisdom to respond early to You, my Lord! Amen.
