Isaiah - Day 53

versebyverse | July 18, 2008 17:19

Scripture:  Isaiah 2:22 (NIV):  "Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils.  Of what account is he?"

Thought:  To me, we need to have an appropriately humble estimation of ourselves as we consider the value of God.

Question:  Do I trust mankind or God?

If a man fashions an idol and people worship that idol, they are trusting indirectly in that man.  God is saying here this is no place to put your trust.  This passage is a warning - STOP IT!  Men should stop looking to other men for their lives' meaning, security, wealth and peace.  They should look to their Maker.   Man is but a creature.  It is the Creator alone Who is worthy of our trust.  Men who are humbled by God, caused to flee and hide from God's splendor, are not trustworthy.  They have failed to remain faithful to God and have thus become unreliable to follow; they have become as full of pride as Lucifer was and so will be brought down even as Lucifer fell:  to destruction in the Lake of Fire.  This verse describes the brevity of men who rebel:  they have "but a breath in" their "nostrils."  Yes, they have their brief moment but it is extremely transitory and very fleeting.  The end result is captured in the statement "of what account is he?"  It is, of course, a rhetorical question:  man is of NO account if he rejects God and separates himself from God.  Man's only hope of lasting life and enduring value dwells in knowing and trusting God.

Idolatry is a fatal trap and today it is rampant.  God is definitely out in the cold.  His Day must be near.  Am I ready?

Prayer:  Dear Maker of Heaven and Earth, (and of me!), I pray You will ever remind me that my life is fleeting unless I place my trust in You.  I want my life to count for You, Father!  Amen.
