Scripture: Isaiah 8:1 (NIV): "The LORD said to me, 'Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.' "
Thought: To me, God has made many of His foretellings a matter of record for our benefit.
Question: Do I know that God knows the future?
The LORD (God Almighty) commands the prophet Isaiah to "take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen." What will now be spoken will become a matter of record. "Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz" means "quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil", and immediately our questions becomes "who" is quick to plunder, "who" is swift to spoil Judah?
Verses following will reveal the answer to that question of "who" will plunder and spoil Judah. It is, of course, Assyria in all its ugly power.
The impending sense of doom should be sharpened by the guilt of those receiving this coming judgment! Can you not see their eyes widening in fear as Isaiah brings God's warning? Or did they listen at all? Did they have any remorse or guilt at all? An appropriate set of questions. Apparently Judah severely lacked the proper respect for God, as we will see in this chapter as we read on...
Isaiah, however, is faithful to the task and does indeed write out the long name. It will become a document of witness to the fact that God foretells truth only.
Prayer: Lord God Almighty, thank You for being so consistent! You are the same today as You were yesterday and as You will be tomorrow. You know the end from the beginning and always have. Help me to never waver from trusting You! Amen.
