Isaiah - Day 149

versebyverse | November 16, 2008 17:03

Scripture:  Isaiah 8:5 & 6 (NIV):  "The LORD spoke to me again, 'Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,' "

Thought:  To me, we human beings are way too flighty and fickle!

Question:  Am I consistently devoted to God?

"...this people" refers to the people of Judah, whom we know were separated from the northern 10 tribes (Israel).  Judah "has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah".  These are believed to be the waters in Jerusalem that flow from the Gihon spring to the Pool of Siloam.  This is a reference from the prophet Isaiah that points out how the people have turned away from the sustaining powers of the Lord.  They have preferred something else.

Judah "rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah".  These, of course, are the two "foreign" kings, King Rezin of Aram (see Isaiah 7:1) which is the land of Syria, and King Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, that is, the Ephraimite kingdom (another name for the 10 northern tribes).

What do these two kings have to offer that is so very enticing to Judah?  Worldliness?  Something new?  A break from the "old ways"?

Whatever it is that has drawn Judah's affection to these two kings, God is jealous.  He is losing the devotion of His people.

What will be the outcome of their rejection of the "gently flowing waters" of Jerusalem?

Prayer:  Faithful God and Father, protect me from the enticements of the enemy!  You are unchanging, faithful to the end, the lover of my soul and my Savior and King--may I ever trust You only.  May I never provoke You to jealousy!  I pray You would enable me to remain faithful in devotion to You.  You are the only God I'll ever need.  Amen.
